Gunnar Strøm er dosent emeritus ved Høgskulen i Volda, og er en legende innen animasjon i Norge. Den årlige prisen som deles ut av Fredrikstad Animasjonsfestival heter «Golden Gunnar», og er oppkalt etter ham. Han har også bokstavelig talt skrevet boken om musikkvideoer, og jobber for tiden med en bok om animasjonstorien i Norge.

Gunnar Strøm etablerte dokumentar- og animasjonsprogrammene på Høgskulen i Volda, og har publiserte en rekke akademiske artikler om animasjon, dokumentarer og musikkvideoer. Disse artiklene inkluderer bl.a. en analyse av musikkvideoen til Take On Me av a-ha, som er rangert som en av de beste musikkvideoene gjennom tidene.

Boken hans, Musikkvideo fra 1989, er fortsatt aktuell og er en klassisk bok om sjangeren. Den ble skrevetp å den tiden da musikkvideoen som hadde vært dominerende på 1980-tallet begynte å gå av moten.

Som ekspert innen musikkvideoer og animasjonsteknikk, ble han overrasket da han fant ut at Take On Me ikke var den første som brukte den spesielle rotoskopiske teknikken, men at den ble brukt i en musikkvideo fra 1979 med Tom Waits i hovedrollen.

Kortfilmen som John Lamb laget kom før MTV startet, og pris på en filmfestival i Los Angeles. Men da MTV ble en umiddelbar suksess, ble rotoskop-pionervideoen glemt.

Boken "Tom Waits for No One" fra 2015 er et fantastisk tilbakeblikk på videoen fra 1979, hvor Gunnar Strøm bidrar til innsatsen til John Lamb. I 2016 kom Lamb på en utstilling i galleriet til Norsk Animasjonssenter, for deretter å drive et galleri i Volda med Gunnar Strøm som viser animasjonskunst fra ledende animatører.

Gunnar Strøm er tidligere visepresident og generalsekretær i International Animated Film Association ASIFA, og grunnlegger av Fredrikstad Animation Festival. Han har blitt tildelt Aamot-statuetten for sitt fremragende arbeid innen film- og filmkommunikasjon og har vært involvert i mange festivaler rundt om i verden, både som programmerer og som medlem av juryer.

Fredrikstad Animation Festival har i mange år delt ut statuetten 'Golden Gunnar' til prisvinnarane. Golden Gunnar-prisen i fjor trolig var den siste, og skal det erstatte det med ein meir 'oppdatert' pris/statuett.

Dosent emeritus at Volda University College, Gunnar Strøm is a legend within animation. In fact, the annual prize awarded by the Fredrikstad Animation Festival is called the “Golden Gunnar”, named after him. He has literally written the book about music videos, a subject close to his heart.

It was at Volda where Gunnar Strøm established the documentary and animation programmes, actively publishing numerous academic articles on animation, documentaries and music videos. These articles include a deep and creative analysis of the music video for the A-ha song Take On Me, still ranked as one of the best music videos of all time.

His book Music Video from 1989 is still relevant and considered by some to be classic book of the genre. It was written at the time when the music video – so dominant in the 1980s – began to go out of fashion.

An expert within music videos and animation technique, he was surprised when we found that Take On Me was not the first to use the special rotoscoped technique – but the 1979 music video starring Tom Waits.

he short film that John Lamb made came before MTV started, and was awarded at a film festival in Los Angeles. But when MTV became an instant success, the rotoscope pioneer video was forgotten.

The book "Tom Waits for No One" from 2015 is a wonderful retrospective of the video from 1979, where Gunnar Strøm contributes to the efforts of John Lamb. In 2016, Lamb came to an exhibition in the gallery of the Norwegian Animation Center, and then ran a gallery in Volda with Gunnar Strøm that shows animation art from leading animators.

Gunnar Strøm is former vice-president and general secretary of the International Animated Film Association ASIFA, and founder of the Fredrikstad Animation Festival. He has been awarded the Aamot statuette for his outstanding work in film and film communication and has been involved in many festivals around the world, both as a programmer and as a member of juries.
